The Alkantara Festival is an international performing arts festival in the city of Lisbon.

The Alkantara Festival presents dance, theatre, and performance, as well as experimental formats at the crossroads of different practices in the arts and knowledge production. The programme features artists from different places, who often engage with urgent questions in contemporary society. As of 2020, the Alkantara Festival will be held annually, in November. Each edition of the Alkantara Festival begins a journey with meetings and activities – at Espaço Alkantara – that deepen the relationship with the festival’s artists, their practices and the issues that their projects raise.

We always start with an impossibility or rather, a possibility which we then rush to render impossible. We always work directly with the place and the people. What can we do then in the thin space we’re now in, dominated by images of absence? Perhaps what we are now seeing is not theatre, but an idea of “theatre” that we insist on projecting digitally, an indefinable space, somewhere between public and private. Perhaps it would be unwise to accept that proximity will guarantee any kind of intimacy. Heading Against the Wall has two versions that can be seen at home or live. They’re two different objects, choose one. This is a documentary about nothing: the more you find out the less you know.

Due to the recent measures adopted by the Portuguese Government indicating a curfew in Lisbon and other municipalities, and in order to preserve the artistic conditions of the performance, TBA had to cancelled the Heading Against The Wall sessions scheduled for 14th and 15th November. There will be an extra session on Monday, 16th November, at 7PM.
